    The History
    Probably Villa or La Villa was appointed the suburban village as in those days Corsena was a village that depended on the Pieve di Controne with another 25 villages this is found in a parchment of the year 983.At the end of the 13thcentury the thermal waters at the Colle started to be used for teraphy and was named Balneus ad Villa (Bagno alla Villa),and the chief town was known a Villa.In the 800’s the populated areas of the Villa where Bagni alla Villa,Corsena, Piano di Corsena,but today the territory is extended to,Castiglioni,Solcini,Campiglia,Palmaia,Dominello,Terrarosa and Novale.It’s construction started in the first half of the 19thcentury with the Baciocchi and then the Borboni.The inhabitants of Bagno alla Villa were already known in the 16thcentury as Michel de Montaigne stayed there in 1581,to cure a liver problem.Bagno alla Villa was the most elegant village in the valley, remaining today as in the 15thcentury when built by Domenico Bertini with it’s palaces and villas belonging to the rich noble families of Lucca.These palaces and villas lodged noblemen,statesmen,poets and kings which left their mark.The ducal stables where built in 1811 by Prince Baiocchi,they were two storey high underneath was for the horses and abovethe stable-boys had their lodgings. The Dukes Villa was built in 1811-1812 and had another villa attached this was the residence of Elisa Baciocchi, Marialuisa di Borbone Parma and her son Carlo Ludovico. Prince Metternich (Foreign Affairs Minister)of the Emperor of Austria Federico 2° also stayed here from the 29th of July to the 29th of August and writes in his memoirs”I live in the comfortable home of Elisa (Baciocchi) which she made for herself.It has a bathroom inside with current flowing water… the air is great not too cold or too hot.The bathrooms are large and luxurious.Everything is enchanted by the surroundings,i’ve stayed in this interesting small village and under alot of aspects i will bring it in my heart with sweet memories.I leave this place with real regret” A Villa Mansi was home to Giuseppina Beaurharnais,first wife of Napoleone; Letizia Ramolino e Paolina Bonaparte Borghese.In recent years the villa was bought by Ian Greenlees an influent englishman director of The British Institute of Florence.In the villa belonging to Bujamonti in 1581 lived Michel di Montaigne.In 1669 in Villa Buonvisi lived the Grandduchess Vittoria Della Rovere,wife of the Grandduke Ferdinando II de Medici with their son Franceso Maria they had 260 servants who lived in the surrounding houses.In 1772 Giacomo III (who was next in line to the throne of england)and his wife Celementina Sobieska stayed here and in the summer of1822 when the poet George Gordon Byron lived here he left behind him a lock of his curls and a gun case with his initials on it.In1818 Percy Bysshe Shelley with his wife Mary Goldwin and children William and Clara stayed in the of Chiappa.Mary wrote to a friend:“Our house is small,but comforable and clean, it has been whitewashed and the furniture is new.We have a small garden with a dome covered with laurel so thick that the sun can’t get through.” Villa Ada is also a part of Bagno alla Villa with it’s beautiful park were today is the towns outdoor swimming pools which have been recently renovated.In the building that the Red Cross occupies theres a memorial tablet to Sir Frances Vane supported by Remo Molinari in 1910 founded the first group of Boy Scouts 30 in all.Another building worth mentioning is the antique chemist ‘Betti’ founded in 1709 which today is still in Empire Style.Elisabeth and Robert Browning stayed here in 1857. The Academic Theatre was built in 1790 and even today has in important ruole in the community.In 1805 Elisa Baciocchi played in the Fedra di Racine and the year after it was used to celebrate the birth of Napoleones daughter Elisa.In 1823 the theatre was rented by Prince Nicolai Demidoff he organized plays and dances inviting all the population.Bagni di Lucca was often visited by famous people like Adolfo Betti(violinist),Adriano Bastoni and Ferruccio Giorno(garibaldian).Even a young Giacomo Puccini played here,here he composed the second act of ‘Fanciulla del West’ and was inspired to write ‘Turandot’.The Giorgetti home(now the Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca)was the birthplace of Marion Crawford (1854-1909) an american author.The attuale town hall was the family home of Della Lena who left it in 1609 to the Hospital of the Mercy of Lucca who in 1685 gave it back to the commune.Ther is also an Anglican Church wanted by the english as they needed a place of worship,opened in 1840 when Duke Carlo Lodovico and the Holy See granted them premission.Was built by the architect Giuseppe Pardini and was used until 1936. Inside there are lots of memorial tablets to the people from the english community who financed it and to the founder Colonel Henry Stisted.To help finance the building of the church and the cimetry Elisabeth Stisted in 1845 published a book containing letters written by herself to her friends while she was in Italy. Some of her letters “Letters from the bye-ways of Italy” were written and talkrd about Bagni di Lucca.Today the church is the towns Public Library dedicated to ‘Adolfo Betti’. Husband and wife Stisted picked Bagni di Lucca as an ideal place to live and around their home they had a gathering of all the english and high society foreigners that came to Bagni.The Stisted library was opened to everyone and soon a large population of english settled here.The Protestant Graveyard is on the otherside of the Lima and was opened in 1842.There are buried many famous people like writter Louise de la Ramèe called Ouida, husband and wife Stisted, Evangelina Whipple(author of ‘A famous corner of Tuscany’ she describes Bagni di Lucca and was published in 1827),Rose Cleveland sister of the 22nd president of the USA and many more. The parish church is dedicated to San Pietro remembered in two parchments of 1073 and 1165,it was of the parish of the Pieve di Controne but later became independent.The bell tower was built at the end if the 17thcentury, that went to place the antique bell tower.Inside it has three aisles divided by pillars,a baptism fountain and a tabernacle of the 16thcentury in the left aisle,the oratory to the Virgin Mary is very nice.

    La storia de La Villa
    Probabilmente Villa o La Villa era la designazione di una località extraurbana. Corsena era una villa che dipendeva dalla Pieve di Controne insieme ad altre 25 ville come si trova in una pergamena dell’Archivio Arcivescovile dell’anno 983. Verso la fine del secolo XIII cominciarono ad essere utilizzate le acque termali che sgorgano dal Colle e probabilmente questo venne chiamato Balneus ad Villa, Bagno alla Villa, che divenne poi l’omonima borgata, mentre il Capoluogo si chiamò Villa. Nell’800 i nuclei abitati che costituivano il Capoluogo erano conosciuti come Bagni alla Villa, Corsena, Piano di Corsena¸ oggi il territorio si estende anche ad altre località quali Castiglioni, Solcini, Campiglia, Palmaia, Dominillo, Terrarossa, Novale. Ebbe il suo sviluppo edilizio nella prima metà del secolo XIX con i Baciocchi prima ed i Borboni poi. Il nucleo del Bagno alla Villa era già celebre nel XVI secolo visto che Michel de Montaigne vi soggiornò nel 1581 in occasione del ciclo di cure che effettuò per curarsi i calcoli al fegato. La borgata del Bagno alla Villa è forse la più elegante del Capoluogo poiché è rimasta pressoché intatta a come la ristrutturò nel secolo XV Domenico Bertini con i suoi palazzi signorili appartenuti o appartenenti alle antiche e nobili famiglie lucchesi. In questi luoghi soggiornarono in varie epoche, uomini di stato, poeti, altezze reali e imperiali lasciando un’impronta indelebile. Le scuderie ducali furono costruite nel 1811 dai principi Baiocchi e presentavano ambienti molto grandi a piano strada destinati al ricovero dei cavalli, mentre al piano superiore furono progettati appartamento per gli stallieri. La Villa Ducale edificata nel 1811-1812 incorporando un preesistente palazzotto fu la residenza di Elisa Baciocchi, di Maria Luisa di Borbone Parma e di suo figlio Carlo Ludovico. Vi soggiornò anche il principe Metternich, Ministro degli Esteri dell’Imperatore d’Austria Federico II, nel periodo dal 29 luglio al 29 agosto che scrive nelle sue Memoires, Documents et Ecrits divers:

    “Io vivo in una confortevole casa che Elisa (Baciocchi) ha costruito per se stessa. Ha il bagno in casa con l’acqua corrente. …l’aria è eccellente; non fa troppo freddo né troppo caldo. Gli stabilimenti dei bagni sono grandi e lussuosi. Tutti sono incantati dal posto e affermano che non potrebbe essere più grazioso, ed io sono della stessa opinione. Io ho vissuto in un piccolo paese molto interessante sotto tutti gli aspetti e di cui porterò nel cuore una dolcissima memoria. Lascio questo posto con vero rimpianto.”

    A Villa Mansi soggiornarono Giuseppina Beaurharnais, prima moglie di Napoleone, Letizia Ramolino e Paolina Bonaparte Borghese. In anni recenti la casa fu acquistata da Ian Greenlees autorevole personaggio inglese, già direttore del British Institute di Firenze. In casa Bujamonti visse, nel 1581, il già menzionato Michel de Montaigne. A Villa Buonvisi nel 1669 soggiornò la Granduchessa Vittoria Della Rovere, moglie del Granduca Ferdinando II dè Medici con il figlioletto Francesco Maria ed una corte di 260 persone, in parte alloggiate in abitazioni circostanti. Nel 1772 fu ospite della villa il pretendente al trono d’Inghilterra Giacomo III Stuart con la moglie Clementina Sobieska e nell’estate del 1822 il poeta George Gordon Byron, che lasciò in ricordo un ricciolo dei suoi capelli, una borsa ed un fucile con incise le sue iniziali. La Casa del Chiappa ospitò nel 1818 Percy Bysshe Shelley con la secolonda mogie Mary Godwin ed i figli William e Clara. Scriveva Mary ad un’amica:

    “La nostra casa è piccola, ma comoda e pulitissima, poiché è stata imbiancata da poco e i mobili sono nuovi. Abbiamo un piccolo giardino con in fondo una cupola di lauri così fitto che non ci passa il sole.”

    Fa parte del Bagno alla Villa anche Villa Ada con il suo splendido parco dove sono state ricavate le piscine comunali recentemente ristrutturate e frequentatissime da tutti i cittadini del Comune. Nell’edificio che oggi ospita la Croce Rossa Italiana una lapide ci rammenta che nel 1910, proprio a Bagni di Lucca, ebbe inizio il movimento scoutistico italiano su ispirazione di Sir Francis Vane coadiuvato dal maestro Remo Molinari. Questo gruppo di giovani esploratori, circa trenta persone, può essere considerato il primo gruppo di Boys Scout sorto in Italia Altro edificio, senza dubbio di pregio, è l’antica Farmacia Betti fondata nel 1709 che presenta ancora gli arredi originali in stile impero. Qui soggiornarono i coniugi Elisabeth e Robert Browning nel 1857. Il Teatro Accademico costruito nel 1790, svolge ancora oggi un ruolo aggregativo per le comunità del territorio. Al tempo dei Baciocchi, nel 1805, Elisa vi impersonò la Fedra di Racine e l’anno dopo vi si svolsero i festeggiamenti per la nascita della figlia Napoleone Elisa. Ancora nel 1823 il teatro fu preso in affitto dal principe Nicolaj Demidoff che vi organizzo feste danzanti e commedie invitando tutta la popolazione. Al teatro suonò un giovane Giacomo Puccini che amava Bagni di Lucca che frequentò a più riprese. A Bagni di Lucca ebbe diverse amicizie fra le quali il violinista Adolfo Betti, il edico Adriano Bastioni, il garibaldino Ferruccio Giorni. Ai Bagni compose il secolondo atto della Fanciulla del West e trasse ispirazione per Turandot. La vecchia casa Giorgetti (oggi sede della Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca) diede i natali allo scrittore americano Marion Crawford (1854-1909). L’attuale Palazzo Comunale è l’antica casa dei Della Lena lasciata in eredità nel 1609 all’Ospedale della Misericordia di Lucca che lo cedette, nel 1685, alla Vicaria. A La Villa vi è anche la chiesa anglicana costruita su volontà dei villeggianti inglesi che avevano bisogno di un luogo di culto dove riunirsi, aperta nel 1840 dopo la concessione rilasciata dal Duca Carlo Lodovico e dalla Curia Arcivescovile. Fu costruita dall’architetto Giuseppe Pardini (già autore del Casinò) in stile neogotico e rimase attiva fino al 1936; al suo interno numerose lapidi ricordano i benefattori inglesi della comunità inglese ed il fondatore Colonnello Henry Stisted. Per finanziare la costruzione della chiesa e del cimitero Elisabeth Stisted pubblicò a Londra nel 1845 un volume contenente le lettere da lei scritte ai suoi amici dall’Italia. Alcune delle sue “Letters from the bye-ways of Italy” sono state scritte ai Bagni di Lucca e ad essa si riferiscono. Oggi la chiesa è sede della Biblioteca comunale “Adolfo Betti”. I coniugi Stisted scelsero Bagni di Lucca a luogo di vita ideale ed intorno alla loro residenza si svolgevano gli incontri di tutti gli inglesi e dei forestieri di rango che passavano per i Bagni. La biblioteca degli Stisted era a disposizione di tutti e molto presto qui si stabilì una vera e propria comunità inglese. Il Cimitero protestante rimane dall’altro lato del fiume Lima e fu aperto nel 1842. Vi sono sepolti illustri personaggi fra cui la scrittrice Louise de La Ramèe detta Ouida, i coniugi Stisted, Evangelina Whipple benefattrice del Comune ed autrice del celebre volumetto “A famous corner of Tuscany” dove racconta Bagni di Lucca, pubblicato nel 1827, Rose Cleveland sorella del 22° Presidente degli Stati Uniti e molti altri. La chiesa parrocchiale è dedicata a San Pietro ed è ricordata in due pergamene dell’anno 1073 e dell’anno 1165. Fu soggetta all’antico plebato di Controne e solo più tardi si rese indipendente. Presenta un impianto romanico seppur frutto di rimaneggiamenti anche recenti come l’antica bifora posta un tempo sopra il portale d’ingresso sostituita poi da un rosone di cemento. Il campanile fu costruito alla fine de secolo XVII ed andò a sostituire quello più antico, posto a fianco della facciata. La pianta è a tre navate divise da colonne; fonte battesimale e tabernacolo posti nella navata sinistra sono del secolo XVI, molto bello l’Oratorio della Compagnia della Vergine del Soccorso.
